Understand the Basics

Understanding Medicare

Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for individuals aged 65 and older, as well as certain younger individuals with disabilities. It consists of different parts, each covering specific healthcare needs:

  • Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance): Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health services.

  • Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance): Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and some home health care.

  • Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage Plans): Offered by private insurance companies, these plans combine Part A and Part B coverage, often including prescription drug coverage and additional benefits like dental and vision.

  • Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage): Helps cover the cost of prescription medications.

  • Medicare Supplement (Medigap): Helps pay for costs not covered by Original Medicare, such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.

When to Enroll in Medicare

Understanding Medicare enrollment periods is crucial to avoid penalties and ensure uninterrupted coverage. Here are the key enrollment windows:

  • Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): A 7-month window starting 3 months before your 65th birthday, including your birth month, and extending 3 months after.

  • General Enrollment Period (GEP): Runs from January 1 - March 31 annually for those who missed their initial enrollment.

  • Special Enrollment Period (SEP): Available for qualifying life events, such as losing employer coverage or moving to a new coverage area.

  • Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment (OEP): From January 1 - March 31, allowing changes to your Medicare Advantage Plan.

Choosing the Right Medicare Plan for You

Medicare is not one-size-fits-all. Choosing the right plan depends on factors like your health conditions, prescription needs, preferred doctors, and financial situation. At Golden Health, we provide a comprehensive review to match you with the best coverage options.

  • If you take multiple prescriptions, we help find the most cost-effective Part D plan.

  • If you want an all-in-one plan, we explore Medicare Advantage options that fit your needs.

  • If you prefer flexibility, we compare Medicare Supplement plans to minimize out-of-pocket expenses. When you set up a call, we can go over this with you based on your needs.
